The Museum of Sarreguemines has gradually acquired an impressive collection of machines and tools used in the ceramic industry.

Production workshops have been reconstituted almost completely to attract visitors who are interested in faience.  This museum is unique in France and in Europe not only because of its theme but also because of its original setting and scope.

Nothing similar exists, apart from the museum-factories of Staffordshire in England.

An original site
In the 19th century, the mills built along river banks were used as a source of energy.

This was the purpose of the Wackenmühle, constructed in 1841 on the left bank of the Blies and now the home of the museum.

An A to Z technical guide...
Visitors will discover how faience is made, from the preparation of the raw material to the last firing.

The basic working phases include calcinating, grinding, diluting, throwing, grading... printing and painting.

The visit starts from the reception building where visitors can see a large model of the site as it used to be. The visit continues with a walk along the Blies to discover the furnaces for calcinating the pebbles, and then the grinding wheels.

Inside the mill,
Inside the mill, the first floor is devoted to the techniques for preparing the paste and shaping the object, while

the second floor shows the different methods for decorating faience through an exhibition of reconstited workbenches, a design unit and a laboratory.

The spirit of workers lives on despite silent machines
None of the machines in the Museum function for reasons of safety but also because it would be necessary to keep the paste in a liquid state all the time...

The human aspect has been incorporated into the Museum in the form of quotations and oral reminiscences. Visitors should not be surprised to hear voices...

At each stand, a worker describes his work and daily life at the factory…
