Two Centuries of Faience

The reputation of Sarreguemines faience is now well established. In two centuries the small family business, which was created during the Revolution, has come a long way. The numerous owners of these gay and colourful pieces are scattered all over the world. Paul Utzschneider and Paul de Geiger, two born leaders, propelled this small town to the forefront of the faience industry.
From the 19th century onwards, Sarreguemines produced and sold all over the world a vast collection of faience vases, flowerpot holders, decorative panels for walls and fireplaces .

Nature of ceramics
Ceramics of nature

Jean Girel

Jean Girel’s ceramics are polymorphic and imitate most various plants, strangest  reptiles, most perfect stones, primary shells and sea-shells. Nature of ceramics, ceramics of nature”  or how this ordinary, but magical and mysterious material, coming out of minerals, submits finally to the ceramists will to express both a relation to our surroundings and to our imagination. Trained at the French National Art School, Jean Girel works on ceramics since 1975. He’s acting as a real research worker. He’s conceiving his own materials and tools, which are the only ones able to satisfy his requirements. His works are the result of a perfect  synthesis between the western know-how and the ancient far eastern pottery techniques. Jean Girel was appointed Master of Art in the year 2000.

For him, ceramics are more than “means of expression” ; it’s a “way to grasp the universe”. This philosophical approach gives us in the end, 230 sophisticaded works of an unaffected style, which are enhanced through a very restrained presentation.
